With the AABL 3-on-3 SHOOTOUT a few days away, here a few updates: It's not too late to register for the SHOOTOUT! We currently have some tough teams registered to play, but to encourage a larger, competitive playing field we have reduced the team entry fee to $100 per team. Teams will be able to register on the day of the tournament with a $15 "day-of" registration fee. The cut-off time for day-of registrations will be 10 a.m. Please make checks payable to "Asian American Basketball League, Inc."
All registered teams must be present at the Chespeake Bay Academy gym no later than 10 a.m. (the gym will be open for warm-ups at 9:30 a.m.). At this time the officials will go over the rules and answer player questions. Teams must have matching jerseys and/or t-shirts; numbers are not necessary but are helpful for scorekeeping purposes. In order to maintain an orderly tournament, teams and players must be aware of their game time and be set and ready to take the court shortly after the previous game is completed. At least half of the players on each team must be of Asian descent (as defined by AABL league rules). To protect the integrity of the league, the AABL reserves the right to disallow any team or player from participating in the tournament for any reason.
All you ballers polish off your A game because the most dynamic basketball league in the region will be hosting the first ever AABL 3-on-3 Shootout sponsored by Brian Tabinga, Independent Financial Strategist! The sparks are set to fly on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the comfy new confines of Chesapeake Bay Academy on Baker Road in Virginia Beach, VA. This will be a double-elimination tournament with the Champions taking home trophies, t-shirts and a generous prize package from local sponsors!
It's the time of the year for the AABL to
recognize some of the top performers of the 2008 AABL Season! The 2008
Season Superlatives were mainly based upon the stats that players
accrued during the course of the year, but of course there are other
factors involved. Please remember that NO actual award is given to the
players-- just the recognition from the players' peers and the rest of
the league. So without further ado, we present to you the 2008 Season
Superlatives!
After a hard-fought regular season and playoffs, only four teams remain in contention for the AABL crown. As expected, this is the most talented group of semi-final teams that the league has ever had and there is no clear cut favorite. Here is a breakdown of the semi-final games being played this coming Sunday:
The action couldn't be any better at the AABL Playoffs as every team that stepped into the gym brought postseason intensity-- which doesn't necessarily mean they brought their A game. Twelve teams entered the playoffs, but only 4 very worthy teams are left standing. #1 Quiet Storm plowed through #9 Dream Team to show intent they are on keeping their crown. Also moving on to the semi-finals, #2 Squires played a too-close-for-comfort game against a DOC team which has been playing inspired ball lately. If #5 Venom was a darkhorse to win it all before, they are now a big-time favorite to take the crown home as they displayed just how dangerous they are when their team is complete. But before they would move on to the next round, the crowd in attendance was treated to maybe the game of the year as Venom battled it out against the young, tough, and skilled Prodigies team. #6 Raptors also join the AABL final four as they avenged last week's loss to #3 Forwarders.
After a long, grueling regular season a lot of questions are still out there but all the answers are right around the corner in the playoffs! This has truly been the most unpredictable season yet and all the teams came into the season with the personnel to hang in the league. And most of the teams in the playoffs have the ability to pull off some bigtime upsets in the postseason. Here is a breakdown of Sunday's playoff matchups:
Round 1, Game 1- #9 Dream Team vs. #8 Bulldogs

Here is a breakdown of Sunday's playoff matchups: Round 1, Game 1- #9 Dream Team vs. #8 Bulldogs This is a rematch of the Week 9 regular season game in which Bulldogs managed to dispose of Dream Team. Now the Bulldogs have the opportunity to send DT home for the season. After an exciting and undpredictable regular season, the AABL Playoffs are finally here! Although a few teams looked like the favorites in the beginning of the year, those favorites now look vulnerable and some overlooked teams have stepped up their game and showed they ain't scared. This is by far the most wide open AABL season ever as ANY team can fall if they get caught slippin. So all teams had better bring their "A" game or expect to get bounced in a hurry. All it takes is a hot (and lucky) streak to win the 3 or 4 games it takes to win the chip. So as always... anything can happen!
Although there is still one more week of regular season games left to play, that last week can be considered the start of the playoffs as several team's postseason status is still unsure-- especially after the drama of Week 8 action. The most notable game of the Week is Quiet Storm's stunning loss to the underachieving Bulldogs who have broke out of their early season slump to hand the defending champs their first L of the season. Another game which shook up
the standings was Skymax capturing their first win in over two years by
beating the Wolves handily.
Things continue to get hot and heavy in the AABL. Many of the teams have already secured their spots in the postseason, but the battle for an automatic pass through the first round is up for grabs and within the reach of quite a few teams. The teams with the top two DIVISIONAL RECORDS in EACH DIVISION will automatically qualify for the playoffs and receive FIRST ROUND BYES. The remaining teams will be ranked in the playoffs according to their OVERALL RECORD. 12 of the league's 14 team's will qualify for postseason play. These rules are the same as the 2007 Season and, in the meantime, if you would like more detailed information concerning the playoffs and TIEBREAK PROCEDURE, please visit http://www.naabl.com and check out theRULES tab.
With just three weeks of games left in the Regular Season, things are getting more and more interesting in the AABL! Although the undefeated Quiet Storm and Squires seem to be the top teams in the league at this point in the season, many teams are proving that they can beat the best on any given day. With every team having some sort of firepower, a hot shooting day and a little luck could bring down one of the top squads-- it's happened before. And after Week 7, there will only be one remaining undefeated team as QS and Squires get set to square off for what may be a Championship preview.
For now, please check out the Box Scores for Week 6 action. Also, the Statistical Leaders are up for Week 6. More updates coming soon!
The midway point of the 2008 Season has quickly come and gone, but the best part of the season is now right around the corner. With teams already clinching playoff berths (12 of the league's 14 teams make the postseason), the powerhouses will be fighting for positioning and division bragging rights. And also important is the First Round Bye that the top two teams in each division receive. A guaranteed pass to the next round is big time.
Week 5 action was sizzling with many of the teams looking like contenders to make a run at the crown. Two teams remain unbeaten and they may be the teams that many expect to see in the finals-- Quiet Storm and Squires. But there are many teams in the league that definitely have what it takes to bring down either of these teams, but bringing their "A" game is a must. There is also some action at the bottom of the pack as teams are scrapping it out to claim the last few remaining spots in the playoffs.
Stay tuned for more updates!
With Week 4 games in the books, it is clear that there may be a few teams that can be seen as favorites-- but the possibilities of a big-time upset down the stretch are very likely. As usual, Bulldogs (1-3) played tough as nails basketball, but the veteran Squires (4-0) squad showed some b-ball I.Q. by adjusting as necessary and playing big-time D to outlast and frustrate the 'Dogs. The reigning AABL Champs , Quiet Storm (4-0), didn't have an easy first half against the upstart Blazers (2-2), but after the Blazers strayed from their game plan, Q.S. easily dusted them. The Raptors (4-0) kept rolling with an easy W over the undermanned and overmatched Wolves (1-3).
As the AABL 2008 Season continues to press ahead, teams are finding their identity and discovering where they stand in the league. With plenty of personnel moves made during the offseason, it is evident that players and teams are still getting accustomed to their new squads. Quiet Storm, Squires, and Raptors are already in mid-season form as all three are the only remaining undefeated teams going into Week 4. The Blazers and Forwarders both grinded out tough yet encouraging wins to keep their season hopes high. The Bulldogs and the Wolves take a positive step as they earn their first wins of the season. After great games in Week 3, expect some big time action for the remainder of the season.
