2009 VA SHOWDOWN Invitational Tournament

Spring is here and though some are missing another exciting AABL Season, some teams are getting geared up for AABL's VA SHOWDOWN! We have decided to skip AABL league play this season so that we could go back to our original winter schedule which has proven to be a time of year which is more family and community oriented. Without friends, family, and fans getting involved in a positive, meaningful manner at the gym and beyond, the AABL cannot fulfill its mission of "cultivating fellowship and diversity in the community through basketball." So, in the meantime, the AABL is bringing another entertaining event to the 757!

On Saturday, May 2 & Sunday, May 3, the AABL will show its style of play and innovative format to the rest of VA! The AABL is one of the most dynamic basketball leagues in the region, if not the country, because we encourage fan and community participation, we have player participation rules that promote a more level playing field and good sportsmanship, and we are all about the ballers playing in a challenging and fun environment. The VA SHOWDOWN is a 6-TEAM battle royal with the BEST teams/players in the AABL versus the best regional representatives from the rest of the state! On the first day of play, each AABL team will face each of its out-of-town counterparts; the next day the win-loss record of the teams will dictate the seedings in a single-elimination tournament that will decide the best team in VA! Prizes will be awarded, but most importantly, bragging rights until the next SHOWDOWN!

For those unfamiliar, with the AABL format, our goal is to bring to the Asian community an environment which promotes outstanding basketball in a diverse and challenging arena of play. The AABL is unlike any other because we are 1) a cultural basketball league that encourages ALL people of Asian descent to participate, and 2) we further promote diversity by allowing TWO (2) Non-Asians on each squad. Besides those requirements/restrictions the game is the same. The AABL hires professional high school/college level referees that promote a controlled and fair basketball environment. Unbiased AABL scorekeepers track each team's and players' stats, including points, rebounds, assists, steal, blocks and more. All games will be played at the spacious and modern gymnasium at Granby High School in Norfolk, VA.

If any teams, players, fans, or curious onlookers have any questions or comments about the VA SHOWDOWN or any other AABL event, please don't hesitate to contact me at or just check out the FORUM.

Please stay tuned for more updates including team and player profiles for the current participating teams!

Thanks!

Unless some teams back out, we appear to have just one more spot left to fill.  Ideally, an out-of-town team but if not, an AABL team can fill the void.  Hit us up and let us know if you want to get involved!
